Little-known places in Romania

Have you already explored Bran Castle and seen all the sights in Bucharest? Then it's time to go off the beaten path. We'll tell you about some of the lesser-known attractions below.

Pelişor

Located in the city of Sinai. It is part of the same palace complex as Peleș. The building was erected in 1899-1903 in the Art Nouveau style.

Prince Karol I ordered the construction of a summer residence for the heir to the throne. The Czech architect Karel Liman and the Viennese designer Bernard Ludwig, who designed the furniture and interior decoration, joined the work. The future King of Romania and the queens of Yugoslavia and Greece spent their childhood here.

There are more than 70 rooms, a stained-glass hall and a large dining room. The walls are decorated with oil paintings.

Today it is a museum.

Biсaz Gorge

Located in the Eastern Carpathians. The natural attraction is the longest in the country. There is a road along it that stretches for 8 kilometers.

The narrowest place is often called the Gates of Hell. It is 5 meters wide.

We also recommend visiting the Red Lake, the deepest in Romania, which was formed in 1837 as a result of heavy rains and rock collapse.

Fortified church of Biertan

It is located in the city of the same name in Transylvania. It was built in 1490-1516 in the Gothic style. The shrine served as a residence for Lutheran bishops. The fortifications of the prayer house are considered the strongest in the region: three rows of walls, six towers and bastions.

Inside, travelers can see carved benches and a sculpture of the Crucifixion, which was created by Wit Stwosz. There is also an altar consisting of 28 paintings. Also pay attention to the vestry doors. They have a complex design with 19-lock protection.

By the way, the religious building was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Lac Ste. Anne

It is located at an altitude of 946 meters above sea level in the crater of an extinct volcano. It is said to have an almost perfect round shape. By the way, fragments of an ancient fiery mountain can be seen around it.

Interesting fact: the reservoir was formed 8 thousand years ago.

There is a legend: not far from here lived a girl who was forced by her parents to marry an evil rich young man. The young woman protested, so on her wedding night she ran away and drowned in the lake. The village was then named in honor of the drowned woman's patron saint.

Trajan's trophy

Monument in the village of Adamclisi. The sculpture was built in 109 on the occasion of the Roman emperor's victory over the Dacians. Once upon a time, there was an altar on this site with the names of 3000 legionnaires carved on its walls.

Over time, the monument began to deteriorate, so the locals began to use its parts to build houses.

In 1977, the attraction was reconstructed.

Snagov

The medieval monastery is located in the county of Ilfov on an island of the lake of the same name. It was first mentioned in the second half of the 14th century. It is said that it stands on the foundations of an ancient Thracian settlement.

Today, the church, bell tower, and fountain have been preserved. By the way, the church was founded by Prince Nyahoe Basarab of Wallachia in 1521. The shrine was built on the site of a building that was destroyed by an earthquake.

Merry Cemetery

It is located in the Sepintsi commune in the Marmarosh region. It is characterized by colored wooden tombstones. They have various figures and inscriptions carved on them: scenes from the lives of the buried, poems telling the reasons for the death of the locals, drawings, etc.

Local artist Ioan Petrash began to make such interesting coffin decorations. He made his first "work" in 1935.

Transfăgărășan

A high-altitude highway whose highest point reaches 2034 meters above sea level. The highway was built in 1968 in connection with the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw Pact troops. More than 6,000 tons of dynamite were used during the construction.

Today it is one of the most beautiful roads in the world.

In 2009, British TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson tested a sports car on the Transféger highway.
