Lithuanian farmers refused to join the anti-Ukrainian blockade with Poles: they want to fight against grain from Russia instead

Lithuanian farmers are no longer planning to join the Polish protest on the country's border starting March 1. Lithuanian farmers do not intend to interfere with grain supplies from Ukraine, and food from Russia is a much bigger problem for them.

This was stated by the head of the Lithuanian Association of Grain Producers, Ausrys Macijauskas, LRT reports. He reminded that Polish farmers are protesting against "cheap grain from Ukraine" and intend to block the road on the Lithuanian border for a week.

Earlier it was reported that Lithuanian farmers would also join the action on their side of the border. However, according to Mr. Macijauskas, this will not happen.

"Lithuanian farmers have not blocked, are not blocking, and are not going to block Ukrainian grain... We see the problem, but we understand the situation - the leaders of Ukrainian farmers came last fall, we had a round table with them, and we discussed how to solve the problem. Of course, we need to control, we need to keep records... We need to do all of this, which the Lithuanian government also does not do, but we are not going to block it, as the Poles do," the Lithuanian farmers' representative said.

According to Mr. Macijauskas, the situation with prices for agricultural products in Lithuania is more strongly influenced by grain supplies from Russia. They are still not banned by the European Union (EU) sanctions.

At the same time, Lithuania's neighbor Latvia has already banned imports of Russian grain at the level of national legislation. In addition, Latvian Agriculture Minister Armands Krause demanded in Brussels that pan-European sanctions be imposed on agricultural products from Russia.

Moreover, Krause suggested replacing Russian grain with Ukrainian grain."Everything that is imported from Russia can be imported from Ukraine. In this way (by banning imports from Russia - Ed.) we will support Ukraine, and not help Russia to feed its war machine," the official said.
