"I was lying there half dead": famous Ukrainian tennis player on what she experienced at the Olympics

Ukrainian tennis player Anhelina Kalinina has admitted that she was forced to withdraw from the 2024 Olympic Games due to sudden health problems. The 27-year-old native of Nova Kakhovka contracted a virus just a few hours before the start of the tournament and came down with a fever, which prevented her from taking to the court.

Kalinina said this in an interview with Tribuna.com, responding to criticism from fans. According to the athlete, when she returned from Paris to Slovakia, where she is training, she tested positive for coronavirus infection.

"They wrote in the press, as far as I understand, that there was a misunderstanding, how come? Because the Ukrainian press wrote that I was feeling bad, something like that. The fact is that when you have a temperature of 38.6, you burn, you lie half-dead, you sweat, you feel sick. The only thing I did was ask them to take me out of the room right away because I was very afraid that I might infect Dayana Yastremska. I left immediately. Then, when I came back, I stayed there all day. Almost a day and a half later, I flew back. I arrived, took a test, and it showed positive for COVID. That's how it was," Anhelina said.

Recently, Kalinina lost to Elina Svitolina in the second round of the US Open tennis championships - US Open-2024.

As reported, the US Open featured the longest match in the history of the tournament, in which Russian Karen Khachanov lost after leading 4:0 in the deciding set.
