The bathroom can become a hotbed of bacteria and fungal spores. High humidity and poor air circulation lead to mold growth. Limescale is an equally common problem - mineral salt deposits accumulate on surfaces that are often in contact with water.

House Digest experts shared the most effective life hacks to help keep your shower perfectly clean. One of the first signs of the need for urgent general cleaning is the appearance of mold. Rapidly multiplying microbes can cause fungal infections such as athlete's foot.

Tip 1

Although it may not seem like a good idea to use a vacuum cleaner in the bathroom at first, experts advise taking precautions first. The entire shower area should be thoroughly dried before you start. In general, a vacuum cleaner can reduce shower cleaning time by 50 percent. Use the special brushes provided with the appliance to protect the floor. Avoid applying too much pressure - the goal is simply to remove surface dirt and hair before cleaning.

Tip 2

Chrome shower fittings tarnish quickly, but you don't have to use chemical solutions to bring back the shine. Take a couple of lemons, cut them in half, and rub them on the surfaces. In case of stubborn hard water stains (limescale), let the juice work for five minutes. Rinse the area with clean water. If you are uncomfortable grating lemon halves, pour the juice into a spray bottle. But be sure to dry the chrome well with a microfiber cloth.

Tip 3

Diet Coke has a low pH balance of 3.2, which means it can remove hard water stains and make surfaces shine. Diet Coke also contains citric acid, another powerful stain remover that eats away at rust. Regular Coca-Cola does not contain acid. Apply the drink to the stains with a sponge and rinse well with soap and water. To remove rust, fold a piece of foil over several times, sprinkle baking soda over the rust, and rub thoroughly.

Tip 4

Limescale can block openings and slow down the flow of water. There are two ways to clean the shower head. First, remove the shower head with a wrench and immerse it completely in a container of plain white vinegar. Let it sit for about 30 minutes, then reattach it and run the water. If the shower head cannot be disconnected or you do not want to remove it, fill a cellophane bag with enough vinegar to cover the head and secure it with a rubber band. Do not leave the watering can in the vinegar for longer than half an hour if it is plated with nickel or brass, as the vinegar can dull the shine.

Tip 5

Oven cleaners work great in the shower - these products contain lye, a caustic ingredient that should be used with caution: keep windows open, turn on a fan, and wear gloves and a mask. The Easy-Off Fume-Free Oven Cleaner label indicates that this product should not be used to clean painted surfaces or aluminum. It is also a good idea to remove the shower curtain and cover metal fixtures before using these sprays. Spray Oven Cleaner on darkened shower floor and walls to restore shine. The ingredients are also effective for removing stains that have formed on white porcelain, tiles, and glass shower doors. Be sure to rinse the areas with plenty of water.

Tip 6

Dirty and moldy shower door rails can interfere with door operation, but they are often neglected. Try using a scouring brush, plastic knife, or an old toothbrush to get into the crevices - chopsticks and toothpicks can also work. Mix a few drops of dish soap, hydrogen peroxide, hot water, and white vinegar in a spray bottle. You can make a paste of baking soda and water, but it can be harder to remove because it's thicker. When you're done, rinse the surfaces with water.

Tip 7

The best way to thoroughly clean a tensioned shower rod is to remove it. This is usually done by grabbing both parts and turning the smaller half to the right. Otherwise, simply remove the curtain and use a stool if necessary. Place an old towel under the work area. Once the rod is wiped clean, go over the rust with fine steel wool or sandpaper.

Tip 8

Unsightly mold on backings and curtains only gets worse over time, so taking care of these areas should also be part of the cleaning routine. Most vinyl, polyester, and nylon materials can be machine washed in hot water on a gentle cycle. Add bleach and use only a small amount of laundry detergent. Wash plastic and fabric shower curtains separately with the same amount of detergent, but add a glass of vinegar. Be careful with other materials, as some of them are only suitable for hand washing.
