EUR 1 million paid for a rare coin: what it looks like

In the Netherlands, a rare quarter guilder coin was sold at auction for a record price. The cost of the coin at the auction reached more than 1 million euros.

According to RTV Utrecht, the actual lot price is 850 thousand euros, and the rest is the commission of the auction house. The record price is explained by the fact that only two such coins have been issued in history. The coin depicts 10-year-old Queen Wilhelmina when she came to the throne.

"This is the Holy Grail of Dutch currency. It's extremely rare," said Jacco Scheper, auction mediator.

This is not the first time the coin has been sold – it has been auctioned four times over the past 130 years. The last time it was put up for sale was in 2001 when it was sold for 95 thousand euros. Since then, its price has increased almost 9 times.

The name of the new owner is not being disclosed because he wishes to remain anonymous. Despite the age of the coin (it was minted in 1891), it is in very good condition. In addition, it is the only one available to citizens, as the second copy belongs to the Netherlands Bank.

"It is available only to a select few. I didn't think it would cost so much, although I knew I would have to fork out," said one of the bidders.
