The Romanian government has added additional items to the list of Ukrainian goods that can be imported only under a special license. Without this document, it is now forbidden to import Ukrainian eggs and poultry to Romania.

This is reported by Euractive. It is noted that the reason for this decision was the complaints of Romanian farmers "about the dumping prices of Ukrainian products."

"Romanian poultry producers have faced a "serious problem" due to the import of eggs and poultry meat from Ukraine, which are sold at prices much lower than Romanian production costs. ...The government has decided to add eggs and poultry meat to the list of products that can be imported from Ukraine only with a license," the report says.

At the same time, it is reminded that this list already includes Ukrainian grain. It also includes:

  • seeds;
  • flour;
  • sugar.

At the same time, the Romanian authorities claim that the introduction of licenses does not mean a complete ban on the import of Ukrainian products into the country. They say that "when Romania is not fully self-sufficient, local processors will be able to import them under license.

Earlier, Bulgaria asked the European Commission to suspend imports of Ukrainian eggs. In this way, the country's authorities met the farmers who threaten to bankrupt local factories due to the inability to compete with cheaper products from Ukraine.

The initiative was voiced by Bulgarian Minister of Agriculture and Food Georgi Tahov. He openly called low prices for Ukrainian eggs a problem. According to Tahov, due to the difference in price with Bulgarian products, 2618 tons of eggs from Ukraine were imported into the country in the first half of 2024, which is five times more than in the same period in 2023.

It should be borne in mind that the EU reintroduced duties on key Ukrainian imports, including eggs, back in July. An "emergency braking" mechanism was introduced, as egg exports from Ukraine to the EU at that time exceeded the established quotas.
