Brittle nails, bloated stomach, skin spots: AI shows what can happen to the body if you sleep less than 7 hours

Doctors constantly remind us that an adult needs at least 7 hours of sleep. Simba, a sleep technology company, has used artificial intelligence (AI) to identify the physical consequences of sleep disorders.
Scary images visually demonstrate what can happen to the human body if you sleep less than normal. Experts note that the skin can become spotted, the stomach swells, and nails become brittle, DailyMail writes.
"Lack of sleep doesn't just make you tired – it manifests itself throughout the body. When sleep is disrupted, reduced circulation causes the skin to look pale and lose vitality, stripping it of its natural glow and vitality," said Lisa Artis, deputy CEO of Simba's charity partner The Sleep Charity.

"In addition, when you don't get enough sleep, your cortisol levels – the stress hormone – rise, exacerbating inflammatory skin conditions, worsening conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, leading to irritation, redness, and itching," the expert added.
To create the image, the researchers surveyed 2,175 adults about their sleeping habits, physical health, and appearance. They passed the answers to an artificial intelligence bot that realized the effect of sleeping more and less than seven hours a day.
Of those surveyed who said they didn't get enough sleep every night, 15 percent experienced brittle nails and 24 percent said they had sensitive skin. The images show that it is primarily the skin that shows signs of lack of sleep.
Worryingly, common skin symptoms included eczema (16 percent), psoriasis (7 percent), and dull skin color (10 percent), the researchers reported.
"At night, the skin works overtime to regenerate and repair itself. During rest, blood flow increases, supporting its natural repair processes and contributing to a healthy complexion," explained Lisa Artis.
According to the researchers, insomnia can also increase the risk of accumulating extra pounds. The survey showed that 26 percent of people who do not get enough sleep are overweight, and 32 percent experience bloating.
"During sleep, the body balances hormones such as ghrelin and leptin, which control hunger and satiety," Artis explained.
"Without adequate rest, ghrelin levels increase dramatically, causing people to feel hungry, while leptin levels decrease, reducing feelings of fullness. This hormonal imbalance causes overeating, especially cravings for high-calorie sugary foods," the scientist added.
Studies have shown that rest and thermoregulation are closely linked. "Sleep loss can impair the body's ability to control and regulate its internal temperature, causing fluctuations and discomfort in the hands and other extremities," the experts emphasized.
