Audi A2 turned into an electric car

Audi is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its iconic A2 hatchback with a unique electric version called the A2 E-tron. This model is the result of an innovative conversion that combines elements of the original car with the latest Audi electric vehicle technology.

The project originated as part of the company's internal internship program, which previously presented the RS6 GTO and the redesigned NSU Prinz concepts. The Audi A2 E-tron impresses with both technical solutions and aesthetic changes that emphasize its futuristic look, Autocar reports.

What's new in the Audi A2

The updated A2 received slim LED headlights and illuminated logos on the front and rear, like the modern Audi Q6 E-tron. Instead of conventional door handles, the designers removed them altogether and replaced the alloy wheels with closed-type aerodynamic wheels. This solution has not only a visual effect but also helps to reduce air resistance, which has a positive effect on the car's efficiency.

With an aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.25 to 0.29, the original A2 was already one of the most efficient cars of its time. However, Audi has not yet revealed the exact specifications of the new electric model. The company has also not confirmed how this version is related to production vehicles such as the Q4 E-tron, although it hints at the possible use of the MEB architecture that underpins many modern electric vehicles.

Repeating the concept

In 2019, Audi has already intrigued fans with an AI concept that could become a successor to the A2. However, since then, the company has not announced plans for mass production of such a hatchback. Nevertheless, the new Audi A2 E-tron may appear in dealerships as early as 2027 as an entry-level electric car. It is expected to be positioned below the A4 and Q4 E-tron models and will receive an even index in line with Audi's new naming strategy.

The original Audi A2 became a symbol of its era with its lightweight aluminum construction, streamlined body, and fuel-efficient gasoline and diesel engines. Although its production ended in 2005, it left a lasting mark on automotive history as one of the first examples of truly efficient family transportation.

At the same time, the A2 did not achieve commercial success due to its high cost and limited practicality compared to competitors that were popular at the time. Nevertheless, the legacy of this car influenced the development of modern Audi electric vehicles.
