When it comes to proper food storage, even the most experienced experts can get confused. As a result, the food can spoil and end up in the trash, which, in turn, will lead to the need to buy new ones.

Thus, due to improper storage of food, we blame ourselves for unnecessary financial expenses. Mirror figured out how to save your food and budget. It presented a list of 10 popular foods and explained how to store them properly.

Greens

Fresh herbs should be cut and wrapped in paper towels. The towel is then placed in a food container with a lid that can be easily removed. Dried herbs, on the other hand, should be stored away from heat and light.

Tomatoes

Ripe tomatoes should not be stored in the refrigerator but at room temperature, away from sunlight. If you have purchased green tomatoes, they will ripen best in the pantry when they are turned stem side down.

Onions and garlic

A dry, dark place is ideal for storing onions and garlic. It is best if they are placed in an open paper bag, basket, or burlap sack.

Potatoes and other root vegetables

These vegetables will keep best and longest in the pantry, not in the refrigerator as most people think. It is best if they are also placed in a perforated paper bag and protected from sunlight.

Grains and nuts

Although most people prefer to store nuts in kitchen cabinets, they will do best in the refrigerator. A cool, dark place is ideal for nuts placed in an airtight container.

Peanut butter and nuts

Oil should definitely not be stored in the refrigerator. Its ideal place is in a kitchen cabinet protected from sunlight. Peanut butter, on the other hand, should be stored in the pantry for the first three months after opening and only then moved to the refrigerator.

Honey and maple syrup

Store a closed maple syrup container in the pantry. After opening it, put it in the refrigerator. Honey, on the other hand, does not require additional refrigeration. Just store it in an airtight container in a dark place.

Dairy, meat and fish products

The lower shelves of the refrigerator are the ideal place to store and defrost meat and fish. Milk and eggs, on the other hand, should be stored in the coldest part of the refrigerator, and it is definitely not the door.

Tropical fruits

Mangoes, avocados, and other top fruits should be stored at room temperature. And if you buy too much of them, simply wash them in a vinegar solution and put them in the freezer.

Tea and coffee

Airtight containers that are not exposed to sunlight are ideal for storing coffee and tea. And if you like to buy coffee in large quantities, just freeze the beans.
