Summer has passed quickly, and the gardening season seems to be over. However, experienced gardeners know that September is not just a harvest month as you still have time to plant certain crops to enjoy the last fresh vegetables from your own garden.

OBOZ.UA tells you what you can plant in the garden in September. Traditionally, this is the time for winter garlic and fast-ripening herbs.

Winter garlic

Five to six weeks before the cold weather arrives, it's time to plant winter garlic. Dry soil needs to be well watered before starting work, but after planting, moisture is no longer needed. Experts advise soaking garlic cloves in potassium permanganate (1% solution) for 2-3 hours beforehand. A week before planting, dig up the bed so that the soil settles well. Don't forget about mulching: sawdust, humus, or peat will do.

Lettuce

This is an unpretentious plant that can tolerate temperatures down to a few degrees below zero. If you plant lettuce in the summer, it will be bitter, and the perfect flavor can be obtained if the lettuce grows at 10-17 °C. Lettuce will be ready to eat in 35-40 days. If frosts come early, just cover the plantings with a protective film.

Arugula

Arugula should be planted in September as it tolerates frost well. The nutty mustard flavor will emphasize any dish. Arugula grows best in an unshaded area. You need to take care of watering, otherwise the greens will start to taste bitter. The crop ripens in 25-30 days.

Autumn radishes will have less pungency, bitterness, and moisture than spring radishes. Early ripening varieties ripen in 15-20 days.

Spicy herbs

Early fall is the perfect time to grow parsley, dill, basil, green onions, etc. These herbs grow quickly and are not afraid of frost, and you can harvest them in 20-40 days. Frozen herbs are a great addition to dishes in the winter months.
