Where to store potatoes to keep them from sprouting and turning green: the perfect place
Sprouting and turning green are signs that potatoes are spoiled. Finding the best place to store this vegetable could solve both problems.
Improper storage of potatoes damages their appearance, texture, and taste, and in some cases even affects the safety of their consumption. Therefore, nutrition experts have shared their advice on this, OBOZ.UA reports.
First of all, if you bought potatoes in a store, you should immediately take them out of the package at home. Plastic bags can retain moisture, creating an unfavorable environment where potatoes "spoil faster". Instead, choose a paper bag, small pouch, or basket that has good air circulation.
There are also several other factors to consider to keep vegetables fresh "for several months." It is important to avoid sunlight at all costs.
In winter, sunlight has a detrimental effect on potatoes, and it causes sprouting.
Secondly, sunlight stimulates photosynthesis, which in turn causes your potatoes to produce more chlorophyll, turning them an unpleasant green color.
To avoid this, it is optimal to have a dark cabinet or kitchen counter protected from sunlight. However, it is important to ensure that these places are at the right temperature for the potatoes.
The main thing is to avoid dark, warm conditions that mimic the natural growing conditions of potatoes, as this will promote germination. Look for a place with a stable temperature of 8-10C.
Storage areas to avoid are next to the oven, on top of the refrigerator, or under the sink. If you already store potatoes there, move them to a cooler place – this is the best way to keep them for a week to a month.
