Anyone who has ever traveled to popular tourist destinations knows how annoying it can be to see a crowd of similar tourists gathered in one place. Noise, conflicts, queues, excessive attention from local vendors and pickpockets.

However, there are still many wonderful places in the world where you can relax without all this. American Express Travel has compiled a list of ten alternative destinations where half of Europe does not fly on vacation. The Express magazine published the top ten.

Porto Cervo, Italy

Porto Cervo on the Costa Smeralda or "Emerald Coast" is a great alternative for those who want to get a taste of the luxurious lifestyle on the Amalfi Coast, but not suffer from the crowds. This beautiful village is located in the northeastern part of Sardinia. It boasts a stunning Mediterranean landscape with turquoise seas surrounded by stony cliffs. Just like the Amalfi Coast, the Costa Smeralda is a magnet for celebrities, so get ready to meet some stars.

Zermatt, Switzerland

Adventure enthusiasts love the Italian Dolomites for their spectacular mountain scenery. But they also attract a lot of people. Luckily, Zermatt in Switzerland offers the same great views along with a more relaxed atmosphere. This mountain village is famous for its ski resort and environmentally conscious spirit. No cars are allowed in this town unless they are electric. After a long day on the slopes, you can try some of the local specialties such as raclette and fondue, or perhaps warm up with some hot chocolate.

Niseko, Japan

Another ideal destination for ski vacationers is Sapporo in Japan. But there is a less popular option. There are several resorts with excellent ski lifts in Niseko, and more than 8 square kilometers are allocated for skiing. In addition, there is delicious food, including the famous Hokaido seafood - king crab and sea urchin.

Where to go on vacation without crowds: atypical destinations

Seychelles

The most popular destination for lovers of luxury island vacations is the Maldives, but the Seychelles are no worse, but there are fewer people here. The Seychelles is an archipelago off the coast of Kenya surrounded by the Indian Ocean. They consist of 115 islands, each of which offers something interesting from rocky outcrops and large mountains to amazing coral reefs, ideal for snorkeling. There are many white sand beaches. There are also dense rainforests and a lot of local wildlife to admire.

Adelaide Hills, Australia

If you want to go a little further and are ready to explore Australia, don't rush to the Blue Mountains, choose Adelaide Hills. While both places offer the best of the Australian landscape, the Adelaide Hills offer some of the best wines in the world, as well as a number of amazing restaurants and great hiking trails. This little-visited region is just a three-hour flight from Sydney. It is ideal for people who want to take a quiet break from the hustle and bustle. You can also meet a koala here.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

In Mexico, crowds of people flock to the beaches of the Riviera Maya, but if you're ready to give up your beach vacation, consider traveling inland. San Miguel de Allende is one of the most colorful cities in the world. It was built on the countless profits from the extraction of local silver. This charming region has been reborn as an artists' colony with a vibrant cultural life and dozens of art galleries. The local cuisine is amazing and the nightlife is vibrant.

Santa Fe, USA

California and Florida are the most popular resort states in America. But take a look at New Mexico. It's often overlooked, while the state capital, Santa Fe, has a lot to offer. For example, the Museum of International Folk Art, which has the world's largest collection of traditional cultural products. Santa Fe has a charming historic center, and when you get hungry, you'll have plenty of mouthwatering Mexican-style restaurants to choose from.

Bodrum, Turkey

Istanbul, the cultural center of Turkey, attracts millions of tourists. Bodrum, on the other hand, boasts beautiful beaches and unrivaled nightlife. Shopping enthusiasts will appreciate the countless bazaars with the opportunity to haggle with vendors for exotic leather goods, handmade soaps, and Turkish cotton. Bodrum is also a great place to explore the Turkish Riviera, which becomes less crowded and more luxurious as you move away from the city.

Udaipur, India

The Taj Mahal is one of the most famous architectural monuments in the world. The result is the dominance of tourists. But the lesser-visited Udaipur, an extremely romantic city of lakes and palaces in Rajasthan, offers no less charm. Its biggest attraction is a palace complex built of granite and marble. Rajasthan is famous for its handicrafts, and you can buy everything from silver to local traditional clothing here.

St. Kitts and Nevis

If you want a relaxing beach vacation, you might be interested in visiting the US Virgin Islands. But there is also a less populated version - the small state of St. Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean. These two tranquil islands offer a slightly different atmosphere. St. Kitts is more lively and more built up, while Nevis offers lush greenery. However, both are great places to relax and sip delicious cocktails by the clear ocean.
