When to sow tomatoes to get a good harvest: growing tricks
Tomato is a fairly popular crop that not everyone likes to grow because of some of the difficulties of this process.
The most common question that worries many people is when is the best time to sow tomatoes in order to get strong seedlings and a good harvest. On his website, the famous gardener Monty Don advised sowing tomatoes in two batches: the first in February and the second in March or even April to delay the harvest and hedge against bad weather.
Tomatoes need a soil temperature of 18C to germinate, so get ready to plant them in late February if you have a greenhouse, or in late March if you plan to grow them outside.
You can also plant them in pots and place them on a warm windowsill, but they will need to be covered to keep their environment just as moist.
Once the seedlings start to appear, don't forget to open them up. The best way to ensure proper growth of tomato seedlings is to give them enough bright light, because if they don't get enough light, they will grow weak with fewer fruits and will be more susceptible to disease.
When the tomato seedlings have their first true leaves, which are the second set after the seed leaves, it's time to transplant them into larger containers.
It's important to plan ahead so that your tomato seedlings have enough space, a warm environment, and plenty of sunlight to guarantee big, bountiful harvests later in the summer.
