When to prune hydrangeas to keep them blooming for years: the best time has been named
During the summer, hydrangeas give a real miracle in the form of beautiful flowers. However, according to experts, this only happens when they are pruned "at the right time and in the right way."
To maintain the shape and prevent overgrowth, it is imperative to carefully prune the shoots. But ifyou do it wrong, you can remove flower buds and get fewer flowers, OBOZ.UA writes.
When to prune hydrangeas
The best time to prune most hydrangeas is from late winter to late March before spring growth begins, so now is the perfect time.
For best results, always prune shoots above healthy buds to avoid dieback - the progressive death of the plant's shoots, stems or branches.
You can safely remove all dead shoots, but be careful because the number of healthy stems depends on how strong your hydrangea is and its variety.
Some hydrangeas bloom on old wood rather than new, so they need to be pruned more carefully. Cut off a few old shoots to stimulate new growth and trim the rest to the desired shape and size.
If you have a Peegee hydrangea or a smooth hydrangea, they both produce flowers on new wood and can be pruned all the way back to the branch frame by cutting last year's stems back to one or two pairs of healthy buds.
Climbing hydrangeas (hydrangea petiolaris) are best pruned as soon as possible after flowering in summer.
