When is Miner's Day in Ukraine in 2024 and how did this holiday come about?
There are many professional holidays in the world that celebrate the merits of representatives of various industries. One of them is Miner's Day.
Miners perform one of the most important functions in ensuring the country's energy security by extracting coal and other minerals from the depths of the earth. The history and date of their holiday was told by Dilova Myslova.
Origin and date of the holiday
The history of Miner's Day dates back to Soviet times, when the authorities decided to recognize the merits and contribution of miners to the country's industrialization. This holiday was approved on September 10, 1947, at the request of the Ministers of Coal Industry of the USSR. The first celebration took place on August 29, 1948.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the tradition of celebrating Miner's Day was preserved. For example, in Ukraine, in 1993, it was established that it would be held annually on the last Sunday of August. In other words, in 2024, the date of this professional holiday is August 25.
In mining districts and cities, Miner's Day is celebrated with festive events, concerts, meetings with veterans of mining labor, and the presentation of awards and honors to the best workers in the industry.
The historical path of Ukrainian miners
Ukraine has a long history of mining. It started in the territory of Kievan Rus in the second half of the 15th century. The first expedition to the Pechersk region to search for minerals was organized by Grand Duke Ivan III of Moscow in 1491.
With the development of technology and the growing need for coal, the number of mines increased significantly, and the profession of a miner became one of the most popular. Thus, by the end of the XIX century, mining occupied one of the central places among other key sectors of Ukrainian industry.
