What cars are called the most economical in the world: top 5

Mazda 3, BMW 230i, and Toyota Corolla will delight thrifty drivers

Fuel economy is one of the key indicators when choosing a new car. This is especially important in times when the cost of gasoline and diesel is rising. Of course, an electric car or a hybrid is a good option to save on traditional fuel. But experience shows that internal combustion engines also have untapped potential.

Top Speed magazine has compiled five cars that allow you to save on fuel. And at the same time, they are not much inferior in power, which is usually a problem with economical cars.

Toyota Corolla

Average fuel economy: 6.7 liters per 100 km

The Japanese automaker continues to hold the lead among models that are balanced in most respects. The compact Corolla, released in 1968, quickly became a bestseller and has not lost its position in 12 generations. Now it is not only one of the most affordable options, but also one of the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid cars in the world. The best engine option for this model is the 4-cylinder M20A. It does not use forced induction and provides good economy.

Volkswagen Golf GTI

Average fuel economy: 7.4 liters per 100 km

If anyone can compete with the Corolla, it's the Volkswagen Golf. The eighth generation of the German hatchback boasts more digital stuffing. Instead of physical buttons, touchscreen panels remain in the cabin, which makes the car more attractive and convenient and brings it as close as possible to the premium segment at a fairly affordable price. At the same time, the Golf GTI's performance and fuel economy remain on top. The model impresses with its handling, quick acceleration and rich functionality.

Mazda MX-5 Miata

Average fuel economy: 6.9 liters per 100 km

The Mazda Miata is not only one of the most recognizable sports cars, but it also boasts outstanding economy. A great merit of the Japanese roadster is that it is lightweight. The weight of the car is only 1025 kg. This, combined with the efficient 2-liter SkyActiv engine, results in excellent efficiency and economy. Moreover, the MX-5 Miata consumes fuel economically even when driving in the city. The only drawback of the model is the rather cramped interior. Which, in principle, is inherent in sports models.

BMW 230i

Average fuel economy: 8.4 liters per 100 km

Despite the fact that the newcomer to the 2 Series can hardly be called light (it weighs 1600 kg), its powerful B48 engine makes it a real monster. If you are looking for a more economical Bavarian coupe, forget about the six-cylinder versions. You will get the most out of a full tank of gasoline if you choose the 230i with rear-wheel drive. The 230i still performs well on the highway, pleases with a chic interior and is very comfortable. The only drawbacks are the cramped second-row seats and small trunk space.

Mazda 3

Average fuel economy: 7.35 liters per 100 km

Another model with the SkyActiv engine on the list. In 2023, the Mazda 3's naturally aspirated SkyActive-G engine became even more powerful than in previous years. Competing with the Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Elantra, Mazda still offers a higher class of car. More importantly, despite having the largest engine in its segment, this model still delivers significant fuel economy. At the same time, it is available in both sedan and hatchback body styles and boasts a fairly spacious interior.
