Ukraine has won three medals in one day: Maguchikh won the gold medal at the 2024 Olympics. Two more bronze medals in athletics
Ukrainian athlete Yaroslava Maguchikh won a gold medal in the high jump at the 2024 Olympic Games. The 22-year-old from Dnipro took first place with a result of 2.00 meters. Another Ukrainian, Iryna Gerashchenko, took third place (1.95 m), winning bronze together with Eleanor Patterson (Australia). Mykhailo Kokhan also took third place in the hammer throw tournament.
The athletes started with a height of 1.86 meters, which Yaroslava missed. Iryna easily took it on the first attempt. Yaroslava started her performance with 1.91m and cleared the barrier on the first attempt without any problems. She was followed by Gerashchenko who successfully jumped.
Both Maguchikh and Gerashchenko simultaneously conquered the 195-centimeter mark.
Rosya continued her winning performance at 1.98, but she was left alone. Iryna did not conquer this height. Together with Australian Patterson, Gerashchenko finished in third place.
Maguchikh and Olislagers played for gold at 2.00m. The Australian managed to show a positive result only on the third attempt.
The battle for the gold medal unfolded at 2.02 meters. The Australian athlete failed to clear 2.02 meters, leaving her with the silver medal. Maguchih had one attempt left, and she decided to spend it on 2.04m, but failed. It should be noted that Mykhailo Kokhan won bronze in the hammer throw.
Commenting on her success, the Ukrainian champion admitted that she was a bit tired at the end of the competition.
"But my coach taught me that I should jump on the first attempt. Today I became an Olympic champion. I want to thank the Armed Forces, all the military, and volunteers. This medal is for the whole country. I was in a good mood, I didn't think about the fact that it was the Olympics. I expected to jump higher. But I'm glad I won the gold. Haters, I hope you will calm down, because you will hear the Ukrainian anthem," Yaroslava said on Suspilne.Sport.
Maguchikh has no doubt that three medals in athletics is great.
"We saw that Mykhailo Kokhan had won a bronze medal. We were allowed to go to him and congratulate him. It's incredible - three medals in one day. The support of coaches is very important. Hello, Ukrainians! I am finally bringing home the gold medal of the Olympic Games. I am very grateful for your support. We continue to fight for our victory," said our jumper.
President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated all Ukrainians on this fantastic success.
"We are proud! Thank you for this result. Ukrainians can be strong and win," Volodymyr Oleksandrovych wrote on social media.
Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klychko joined in the congratulations.
"Congratulations and thanks to our athlete Yaroslava Maguchikh, who won a gold medal in the high jump. I also congratulate Iryna Gerashchenko on her bronze medal in this discipline! Girls, the whole of Ukraine is jumping with you today!" Vitaliy Volodymyrovych wrote.
As OBOZ.UA previously reported, in the qualifying round, Yaroslava needed only two jumps to qualify for the medal round. She missed two starting heights, and then took 1 meter 92 centimeters on her first attempt. Gerashchenko took the height on her second attempt.
On July 7, Maguchikh broke the world record in women's high jump, which had stood since 1987. The 22-year-old from Dnipro became the first woman in history to jump 2.10 meters at the Diamond League in Paris.
Afterward, the Parisian stadium Sebastian Charlette gave Jaroslawa a standing ovation. The spectators who came to cheer for the athletes went into a branded frenzy after the Ukrainian's record-breaking jump.
By the way, 22-year-old Yaroslava has been dating the coach's son, Nazar, for a long time. Stepanov is 19 years old and also a professional athlete, competing in the 110-meter hurdles.
