The US trade war is escalating: Trump intimidates the world with 25% duties on important goods
In addition to the existing duties on metals, the United States plans to impose an additional 25% duty on steel and aluminum imports. The new tariffs will be officially announced on February 11 or 12 and will take effect almost immediately.
According to Reuters, US President Donald Trump told reporters on February 9. The new duties will affect all countries of the world without exception, although, according to the US government and the American Iron and Steel Institute, the largest importers of US steel are Canada, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea and Vietnam.
"It's very simple - if they charge us, we're going to charge them," Trump said of the reciprocal tariff plan.
It should be noted that Canada is the largest supplier of primary aluminum to the United States. In the first 11 months of 2024 , Canadian aluminum accounted for 79% of total imports of this raw material.
"Canadian steel and aluminum support key US industries, including defense, shipbuilding and automotive. This makes North America more competitive and safer. We will continue to defend Canada, our workers and our industry," wrote François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation of Canada, on his X page.
Yaroslav Zheleznyak (Holos), First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada's Tax Committee, revealed how China plans to respond to Trump's trade war, which will deal an unpleasant blow to the politician's voters at the beginning of his term. In particular, Beijing has taken the following steps:
- imposed duties on:
- American LNG and coal (15%);
- oil and agricultural machinery (10%);
- hit Google;
- imposed export restrictions;
- "banned" Calvin Klein products.
"Experts say that China is still acting with restraint - $14 billion of American exports are under attack, while Trump has imposed $525 billion of Chinese goods. Beijing leaves room for negotiations. But there is a caveat: Trump's voters in states such as Indiana, Texas and Michigan will suffer first of all," Zheleznyak said.
Earlier, OBOZ.UA reported that Donald Trump was going to impose duties on goods from the European Union. He justified his intention by the fact that Europe "treated the United States terribly".
