Bulgaria has asked the European Commission to suspend imports of Ukrainian eggs because of the threat of bankruptcy of local poultry farms, as Ukrainian eggs are much cheaper. Due to high competition, the situation may remain unstable.

This is reported by BTA. This initiative was announced by Bulgarian Minister of Agriculture and Food Georgi Takhov at a meeting of the EU Council on Agriculture and Fisheries in Brussels.

The main problem pointed out by the Bulgarian side is the low prices for Ukrainian eggs, which makes them much cheaper than eggs produced in Bulgaria. In the first half of 2024, Bulgaria imported 2,618 tons of eggs from Ukraine, which is five times more than in the same period in 2023. Bulgarian producers cannot compete with such a massive amount of imports and significantly lower prices, which creates a serious imbalance in the domestic market.

Minister Georgi Takhov emphasized that previous measures, such as raising duties on egg imports, have failed to resolve the situation. Import prices remain too low, causing losses to Bulgarian poultry farms and leading to the bankruptcy of many local businesses. Tahov noted that without the European Commission's active intervention and the introduction of more stringent measures, the situation could deteriorate significantly.

During the EU Council meeting, Minister Tahov appealed to the European Commission to ban the import of eggs from Ukraine to Bulgaria. He emphasized that these measures are necessary to stabilize the domestic market and protect the interests of Bulgarian producers. Bulgaria supports Ukraine in its struggle for independence, but cannot allow this to lead to the bankruptcy of local farmers and poultry farms. "We stand for firm support of the people of Ukraine, but this should not come at the cost of bankruptcy and violation of the rights of our farmers," Takhov said.

According to the Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture, in the first six months of 2024, egg imports from Ukraine increased fivefold compared to the same period in 2023. This unprecedented growth has put serious pressure on pricing in Bulgaria, as Ukrainian eggs are sold at significantly lower prices. This situation complicates the work of Bulgarian producers, who are forced to raise prices due to production costs, which makes them uncompetitive on the domestic market.

If the European Commission decides to ban imports of Ukrainian eggs, this may temporarily stabilize the egg market in Bulgaria and allow local producers to resume their operations. However, this decision may cause other problems, such as higher egg prices for consumers due to a decrease in the number of offers on the market. It is important that the European Commission finds a balance between the interests of consumers and producers.

As OBOZ.UA reported earlier, Polish authorities banned the import of hundreds of tons of agricultural products from Ukraine. Most often, frozen raspberries were banned during the summer season.
