Swedish authorities have decided to dramatically increase payments to refugees who want to leave the country. They are ready to pay up to 350 thousand Swedish kronor (about $34 thousand, or more than 1.5 million hryvnias) for returning to their homeland.

According to Aftonbladet, the grant program is planned to be launched in 2026. For this purpose, SEK 1.4 billion will be reserved in the budget, which will be enough for 4000 people to participate in the program (subject to receiving the maximum payment).

Refugees and people who have been granted protection can apply for a grant. They must also be granted a temporary or permanent residence permit.

Today, migrants can also receive money for returning to their countries of origin, but they are paid much less: 10 thousand kroons for an adult and 5 thousand kroons for a child, but no more than 40 thousand kroons for a family. But such payments do not attract them – in 2023, only one person used the program.

"They may feel that life in Sweden has not turned out the way they wanted, that they are stuck in isolation, or that you are older and want to return to your country of origin," says Migration Minister Johan Forssell.

According to the Swedish authorities, there are 400-500 thousand migrants in the country who are unemployed or have difficulty earning money. They are paid benefits, which puts an additional burden on the budget.

The authors of the idea were representatives of the right-wing populist party Sweden Democrats, which won 20.4% of the vote in the last parliamentary elections, becoming the second most popular party in the Riksdag. Some local regulators have criticized this initiative, arguing that it could negatively affect the integration of migrants into Swedish society.
