People who play instruments learn a second language faster: study finds
Scientists have found that people who know how to play musical instruments find it easier to learn a foreign language. They came to this conclusion after analyzing 60 studies that evaluated the relationship between playing an instrument and speaking a second language.
According to MailOnline, the findings of the researchers may indicate that the inclusion of music in classrooms during lessons may in some way increase the chances of students learning a foreign language. The results of the study were published in the journal Royal Society Open Science.
Scientists note that the ability to learn new languages is very important in today's multicultural and interconnected world. However, there are significant differences in how well adults can learn a non-native language. Some people learn a foreign language quickly and master it almost as if it were their native language, while others find it difficult to memorize and reproduce non-native sounds at the right level.
According to scientists, a recent study has confirmed that musical abilities are indeed positively related to second language learning outcomes.
"These findings align well with the idea that incorporating music during class or participating in musical activities can make learning a foreign language easier," they say, adding that this idea requires further research to determine whether musical abilities can "transfer" to learning a non-native language.
