Not garlic and not yogurt: top 5 superfoods to boost immunity
According to some doctors, popular home remedies and well-known healthy foods may be more myth than fact.
A survey conducted by Wren Kitchens revealed how many Brits trust common food myths, prompting Dr. Deborah Lee and Dr. Sham Singh to step in and debunk these misconceptions. They have identified five lesser-known ingredients that are indeed immune-boosting superfoods.
According to the survey, one of the most widely held myths is that garlic is a powerful immune-boosting agent, with 42% of Brits believing this. However, Dr. Lee noted that scientific evidence, including human studies, does not fully support this claim.
"Although garlic can stimulate certain immune cells, such as macrophages, lymphocytes, and natural killer (NK) cells, most of the supporting studies have been conducted in animals," she explained.
What foods really strengthen the immune system
Blueberries
However, many Brits in the survey also correctly identified some foods that are true superfoods for boosting immunity. For example, 36% are aware of the power of the humble blueberry. It is especially high in antioxidants, and its polyphenols have antiviral, antibacterial, and immunomodulatory properties.
Leafy greens
Another such superfood is leafy greens. Recent studies have shown that eating green leafy vegetables, such as kale, stimulates the production of intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs), which are a vital part of the gut immune system.
Wren Kitchens experts recommend adding greens to smoothies, pasta, omelets, or baked goods, such as kale, to chips.
Turmeric
Almost half of the respondents, 47% to be exact, were aware of turmeric's ability to strengthen the immune system. Dr. Singh noted: "It contains curcumin, a powerful compound with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that help minimize inflammation that could otherwise weaken the immune response."
Citrus fruits
In the same vein, citrus fruits are known to boost vitamin C levels, which are essential for supporting cells in fighting infections.
Ginger
Ginger is another ally in the fight against inflammation and oxidative stress, and Dr. Singh noted: "It is particularly effective in relieving respiratory infections and cold symptoms."
