Argentina and Ukraine to play at the 2024 Olympics
The head coach of the Argentine Olympic team, Javier Mascherano, whose team will be Ukraine's rival at the 2024 Games, has decided on the players who will play in Paris outside the age quota. According to the regulations, each team is allowed to enter three players who will be over 23 years old at the time of the competition.
Mascherano decided to refuse the legendary Lionel Messi, ESPN Argentina reports. The Inter Miami forward will not come to the French capital due to the heavy schedule of the club season.
Instead, the Argentine coach decided to use experienced Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, veteran of Benfica Lisbon Nicolas Otamendi, and 24-year-old Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez at the Olympic Games.
All of the players won the 2022 World Cup with the national team. Messi won the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
In addition to Argentina and Ukraine, Morocco and the bronze medalist of the Asian Youth Cup, which will be determined on May 2, will play in Group B of the Olympic football tournament.
