How to wake up cheerful and full of energy: scientists have drawn attention to an important nuance

ObozrevatelNews

Health experts from one of the world's leading institutions, Harvard Medical School, said that understanding one aspect of sleep can significantly improve your well-being after waking up. They emphasized that sleep is crucial for the body's recovery and optimal functioning.

In addition, they explained that understanding sleep cycles can "help you improve your sleep hygiene and wake up feeling truly refreshed," OBOZ.UA writes.

Sleep without REM sleep includes three stages: light sleep, deeper sleep, and deep sleep. Sleep experts believe that the last stage, known as deep sleep or slow wave sleep, is the primary time when your body renews and recovers. This stage of sleep seems to play the biggest role in energy production by increasing your ability to produce ATP, the body's energy molecule.

Researchers have found that during deep sleep, there is less blood flow to your brain, which cools down noticeably. At the beginning of this stage, the pituitary gland releases a pulse of growth hormone, which stimulates tissue growth and muscle repair. The researchers also said that there are elevated levels of substances that activate your immune system in your bloodstream, making it more likely that deep sleep helps prepare your body to defend against infections.

The experts continued: "REM sleep helps to restore your mind, perhaps in part by helping to clear irrelevant information. Research on students' ability to solve a complex puzzle with abstract shapes suggests that the brain processes information during the night. Students who had a good night's sleep after seeing the puzzle performed much better than those who were asked to solve the puzzle immediately."

Other studies conducted at Harvard Medical School and elsewhere have found that REM sleep facilitates learning and memorization. People who were tested on how well they learned a new task improved their results after a night's sleep.
