The Christmas table is not just a place full of different food. It is part of a real festive ritual that brings the whole family together and gives a sense of comfort.
Ukrainians follow many traditions of Christmas celebration, including table decorations. Each element of the decor has its own symbolic meaning. FoodOboz tells you how to decorate the table for Christmas and what dishes should be placed where.
Themed colors
When decorating the Christmas table and the room as a whole, you should use thematic colors. They are: green, red, and gold or silver.
Tablecloth and towels
Choose a traditional tablecloth or one with a New Year's ornament. Embroidered towels can be used as decorative elements of the table.
Candles
One large candle in the center of the table will not only decorate the table, but also symbolize prayer and family comfort. The candle can be decorated with Christmas tree branches or Christmas decorations. You can also use candles of different heights to decorate the table.
Straw decor
Straw can be used as a symbol of the manger where Jesus was born. It can be laid under the tablecloth, or you can create beautiful decorative bundles that can be placed around the house.
Kutia
Kutia is considered to be the main dish of Christmas, so it should be in the center of the table. After the celebration is over, it is customary to leave kutia on the table for the spirits of deceased relatives who visit their homes on Christmas.
12 dishes
Traditionally, hostesses prepare 12 meatless dishes for the Christmas table. Prepare the dishes so that they look festive. And use different dishes to serve each of them to emphasize the uniqueness of each dish.
Rye and wheat grains
They can be used as decor. Rye and wheat grains symbolize prosperity and harvest.
Star of Bethlehem
A small star should be placed above the table. If this is not possible, then the star can be used to decorate the main dish or the centerpiece. Many people also place an icon next to the festive table.
