What could be more enjoyable in the heat of the day than enjoying an iced drink? But if you use it too often, the ice maker in your fridge can develop odors and even become covered with mold if you don't clean it.

In fact, cleaning this system of the refrigerator is not difficult at all. OBOZ.UA has collected tips from professionals on how to do it right. Prepare a mild dishwashing detergent, a few clean microfiber cloths or sponges, an old toothbrush, bleach, and a little baking soda and vinegar.

Empty the refrigerator

Start by taking all the food out of the fridge and freezer. Defrost it, throw away any expired food, and wipe down all surfaces with warm, soapy water. This will ensure that you get rid of any odors.

Turn off the ice maker

If the ice maker in your fridge has a separate power supply, unplug it. Or simply keep the entire appliance unplugged. This way, you will protect yourself from electric shocks during cleaning. And don't forget to place a few towels on the floor to prevent spills.

Remove and clean the ice maker components

Carefully remove the ice bin and any other removable parts from the ice maker. Refer to the appliance manual for detailed instructions. Wash these components by hand with warm, soapy water using soft cloths or sponges. Avoid using a dishwasher as this may damage the parts.

Clean the outside and inside of the ice maker

Dissolve a couple of drops of mild soap in a bowl of warm water and clean all exposed surfaces of the ice maker with this solution. Use a damp, warm cloth to remove any stubborn ice. Use an old toothbrush to clean corners and other hard-to-reach areas.

Disinfect everything thoroughly

Check your refrigerator's manual to see if it is safe to use chlorine-based cleaners. If it does, dilute a teaspoon of bleach in a liter of water and wipe all surfaces of the ice maker with the mixture. Then rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry.

Replace the water filter

If your refrigerator has a water filter, it's time to replace it. A new filter will ensure better ice flavor and better performance from your ice maker. Try to change the filter every six months. Clean the ice maker with the same frequency.

Put everything back together and restart the appliance

After cleaning is complete, carefully reassemble all removed components, including the ice bin. Check that everything is securely fastened. Connect the refrigerator to the mains and turn on the ice maker if it has a separate control panel. You can also put the food back into the fridge at this point.

Rinse the system

Throw away the first 2-3 batches of ice that freeze in the generator. This will help flush the system and eliminate any residual tastes or odors from the cleaning process.

Keep it clean

Get into the habit of removing old ice and wiping down the surfaces of your refrigerator every week. Do a deep cleaning every six months. Or even more often if you use the ice maker frequently or notice any foreign odors or discoloration.
