How often do you need to clean your coffee maker: an expert answers
If making a hot cup of coffee is a staple of your morning routine, you need to know when and how to clean your coffee maker to ensure that your drink is not only tasty but also safe.
Expert Beth McGee, author of the book "Clean Your House Now: The Home Cleaning Method Anyone Can Master," told us how often you should clean this daily kitchen appliance, Eat This Not Thatwrites.
"If you use your coffee maker every day, it should be thoroughly cleaned about once a month," McGee says. "Coffee grounds leave residue in the brew basket, and water stains and bacteria can build up in the brewing components."
What parts of the coffee machine need to be cleaned?
"For conventional coffee makers, remove all the baskets and soak them in the sink with hot water and a cup of vinegar," says McGee.
What's the best way to clean your coffee maker?
Here's a step-by-step guide you can follow:
- Fill the coffee maker completely with 1 part water and 2 parts white vinegar and brew.
- Repeat, skipping the same water a second time.
- Rinse the baskets with clean water and pour another pot of water and a spoonful of grounds into the basket to get rid of any residual vinegar taste or smell.
- When you're done with the coffee maker itself, spray the inside of the reservoir with a spray of bleach and leave it on for a minute.
- Wipe the inside and rinse with hot water.
"Cleaning your coffee maker will improve the flavor of your drinks," says McGee. "Coffee tends to contain a lot of acid, and your coffee maker can get a burnt odor that will affect the taste of everything you brew in it."
