Porto is a picturesque coastal city with a rich history, culture, and delicious gastronomy. It attracts tourists from all over the world not only for its architectural monuments but also for its famous port wine.
With a population of 1.3 million people, Porto is second only to the capital Lisbon, according to Express. A direct flight from London to Porto takes about two hours, making it an affordable destination for short trips. Airlines such as Ryanair, easyJet, and British Airways regularly offer flights from £46 (UAH 2,469).
Cultural attractions
For fans of history and architecture, it is worth visiting the Catedral do Porto, which was built from the XII to the XVII centuries. Thanks to this, its architecture combines Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque styles. No less interesting is the courtyard with traditional azulejos – blue and white ceramic tiles.
Another attraction is the Palácio da Bolsa, a former stock exchange that is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During the tour, visitors can see the magnificent Arabian Hall, which fascinates with oriental motifs.
Art lovers will enjoy the Art Deco Villa Serralves. In addition to the museum of contemporary art, there is a park and a cinema on the territory, where themed events and exhibitions are often held.
Walks and bridge views
The UNESCO-listed Ribeira neighborhood beckons with its narrow streets and brightly colored houses. It's the perfect place to stroll along the Douro River and relax in cozy bars serving local specialties.
The iconic structure of Porto is the Don Luis I Bridge, which connects the city with Vila Nova de Gaia. A walk across this bridge offers incredible panoramic views, especially at sunset.
Gastronomic experiences
The cuisine of Porto deserves special attention. A traditional dish is francesinha, a sandwich with ham, sausage, steak, and cheese, filled with spicy sauce and baked to a golden brown.
In addition to delicious food, Porto is famous for its drinks. Be sure to try the local port wine, as well as Ginjinha, a cherry liqueur served in shots with berries at the bottom.
