A joint Egyptian-British mission has identified an ancient tomb near Luxor as the tomb of Thutmose II, the first discovery of a royal pharaoh's tomb in more than 100 years.

This was reported by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities of Egypt. Located west of the Valley of the Kings, the tomb of Tuthmosis II was the last lost tomb of the kings of the 18th Dynasty of Egypt and the first royal tomb discovered after King Tutankhamun in 1922, Reuters reports.

Archaeologists were able to identify the tomb thanks to alabaster vessels found at the site, which bear the names of King Thutmose II and his wife Queen Hatshepsut, one of the few women to rule Egypt.

They also found pieces of his funerary furniture, as well as pieces of mortar with blue inscriptions, yellow stars, and religious inscriptions.

However, due to a flood shortly after the king's death, the tomb is generally poorly preserved. There are signs that much of its contents have been moved, and restoration work is ongoing.
