Even some fruits and vegetables: what foods can be stored in the heat without refrigerator

Thanks to electrical appliances that simplify everyday life, electricity has become an integral part of our daily existence. However, with constant power outages, Ukrainians are forced to learn to do without this convenience. This includes doing without a refrigerator. But if it's quite easy in winter, what do you do in the summer during the heat wave?

Famous Ukrainian chef Yevhen Klopotenko says that there is nothing complicated about it. The main thing, he believes, is to find any cool place.

The rules for storing any food without refrigeration are simple: they should be stored in a dry, cool place in the house, away from sunlight, and eaten as soon as possible.

So what foods can be stored in the heat without a refrigerator and how to do it?

Fruits and vegetables

Almost all fruits and vegetables can be stored without a refrigerator. Some (like apples) can be kept at room temperature for quite a while, while others should be eaten within a few days.

One way or another, it is important to find a dark place for them. First of all, for vegetables. Carrots and beets are well stored if they are put in boxes with sand. To store potatoes, it is important that they are not exposed to sunlight or light.

Meat

Dried and cured meat, various salty meat delicacies, jerky and sausages are the best way to preserve meat products for a long time without a refrigerator.

You can make a stew out of any ordinary meat. Under the right cooking conditions, such preservation will have a shelf life of up to 3 years even without a refrigerator. However, the stew should still be stored in a dark (if the jar is glass) and cool place.

Another life hack to keep meat or lard without a refrigerator is to put it in a saucepan or glass jars and sprinkle it well with salt.

You can also make a saline solution -10 tbsp of salt per 500 ml of cold water. To eat such meat, you must first soak it in water to get rid of excess salt.

Fish

Just like meat, it is best to either make dried or canned fish.

You can extend the shelf life of fish with salt too. Clean the fish from the scales, remove the insides and gills, wash and dry it well, and put it in any container, sprinkling it with salt. Put it in a cool place. Then you can soak the fish in water and fry or dry it.

Butter and cheese

Wrap the butter in additional parchment paper, put it in a bowl, and cover it with cold, slightly salted water. Cover with a plate and place something heavy on top. Put the container in a cool place.

Cheese (not cottage cheese) is well stored without refrigeration, but it must be put in a bag and wrapped well to prevent it from drying out.

Milk, cottage cheese and sour cream

To extend the shelf life of milk, boil it with ½ tsp of baking soda per 3 liters. Then pour it into dry, clean jars. Transfer the mass to glass jars and then place them in cold water. Do the same with the sour cream jars.

Bread and pastries

Although storing bread in the refrigerator helps keep it fresh longer, if you intend to eat the bread within the next few days, you can leave it at room temperature. Otherwise, it will be appropriate to make breadcrumbs right away.

This also applies to pastries. However, baked goods with any filling should be eaten as soon as possible.

Canned foods

Canned foods that have already been opened can be stored without refrigeration for several days in a cool place. The main thing is that the juice of the preservation remains in the jar, and that the preserved product is completely immersed in this juice.

Canned food should never be left in the sun

Contrary to popular belief, cereals, pasta, honey, and oil should always be stored without refrigeration even if the butter is already uncorked and the pasta packet is open.
