Bananas will stay fresh for two weeks longer: a simple life hack
Many people don't realize that they store bananas in the wrong place and shorten their shelf life, but you can keep them fresh longer if you know how to do it right.
The reason that bananas tend to spoil quickly is that they are sensitive to a substance called ethylene, a natural plant hormone that most fruits produce and is responsible for ripening. When too much fruit is stored in a bowl, a large amount of ethylene can accumulate in the air, causing bananas to turn from ripe to rotten within a few days, OBOZ.UA writes.
According to experts, the best way to keep bananas fresh is to remove them from the fruit vase. Separate the bananas from the stems and wrap the top of the stems in plastic wrap.
It may seem strange, but wrapping the banana stems prevents too much ethylene from being released into the air and affecting the rest of the fruit.
Store bananas at room temperature separately from other fruits after they have been wrapped and they should stay fresh longer than usual.
However, if you want to keep bananas even longer, you can put them in the refrigerator when they turn yellow. Bananas can be stored at low temperatures while they are already ripe, as refrigeration further slows down ripening to keep them fresh.
