On September 19, the Netflix streaming platform will premiere the series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, based on the true story of the murder of their parents by two brothers. The brothers are still alive today, but will be behind bars for the rest of their lives.

The new series was created by the creators of the movie based on real events, Dahmer the Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. Due to the fact that the previous project was a hit with the audience, fans have high hopes for an interesting movie about the killer brothers. According to USA Today, "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story" is the second part of Ryan Murphy's anthology "Monsters" and is a continuation of the above series.

"In the second installment of the Monsters anthology, Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan take on another high-profile case that captured the nation in the '90s. On September 19, Netflix will release "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story" tells the story of the two brothers who murdered their parents on August 20, 1989, and the events surrounding the brutal murder. (Both were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole)," Netflix said in a statement.

In the teaser for the premiere, the creators briefly described what the viewer should expect and what issues the series will address. At first, the whole Menendez family appears in the frame, posing awkwardly for a photo. At this moment, a dialog between the mother and father is heard, where the woman tries to find out what is happening in the relationship between her husband and sons, and he answers: "It's over. Stop it. I will fix this family."

In the next shot, two brothers appear with their torsos exposed, as if to show their vulnerability. They embrace, and then a shot is heard and drops of blood appear on the face of one of them.

Another teaser showed two men (the Menendez brothers) driving up to the mansion at night in a car, entering it and heading for the big door behind which their parents are presumably sleeping. After they cross the threshold of the room, two shots are heard one after the other.

What is known about the real case

On August 20, 1989, more than 15 shots were fired at a wealthy estate in Beverly Hills. According to the source, Jose Menendez (father) was shot 6 times with a shotgun, and Kitty Menendez (mother) was shot 10 times. Out of fear, sons Lyle and Erik later threw away their weapons and bought tickets to a movie to create an alibi. After the police arrived, this did divert law enforcement's attention from the brothers for a while, but they still remained the main suspects.

Later, through Erik's psychiatrist, the police learned that the brothers committed the murder. During the trial, the jury claimed that the reason was the sons' desire to take over their parents' wealth, but the men claimed that it was actually revenge. According to them, their parents committed sexual, physical and moral violence. However, the confessions failed to reduce their sentences, and the men have been serving life sentences in various prisons in California since 1996.

How society reacts

After the official trailer of the series was published online, future viewers of the movie stood up for Lyle and Erik and began to claim that the men were only defending themselves. Such a resonance after almost 30 years since the conviction could change the history of the case.

  • "Something tells me that the monsters in this story will not be what we think they are."
  • "The brothers are not monsters, free them!"
  • "I like the symbolism. Kitty and Jose were obsessed with the image of their family. Everything had to be perceived in a certain way. And now that they are dead? The facade is gone, and the boys are naked. They are vulnerable."
  • "The monsters are the parents and the judicial system, which protected the rapists and repeatedly refused to consider the brothers' appeal to protect their decision."
  • "I remember this case, the trial and how no one wanted to believe these guys. The father was a monster, and the wife was a worthless doormat. I cannot respect a woman who does not protect her children."
  • "The parents were so messed up in the head. These boys were scarred for life, I think the parents are the real monsters in this story."
  • "When I googled their case, I felt deeply sick and disturbed. The fact that one of the boys said that he felt safer in prison than at home speaks volumes!"
  • This gives clues as to who the "monsters" are in this episode. It was clearly shown when he didn't want to touch his shoulder. I really hope this helps the brothers and not portray them as villains. I really hope that one day they will be free."
