The legendary French singer Françoise Ardi has died: "Mick Jagger's perfect woman" fought cancer for 20 years
The legendary French singer and actress Françoise Ardy has died at the age of 80 after a long battle with cancer. The star, known worldwide for her crystalline voice and melancholic lyrics, suffered from various types of diseases, including lymphoma, for two decades.
The artist even wanted to resort to euthanasia, which is prohibited in France, The Daily Mail reports. The terrible news was reported by Ardi's son Thomas Dutronk on his Instagram page.
Françoise rose to fame at the age of 18 with her first hit, "Tous les Garcons et les Filles" ("All the Boys and Girls") in 1962 and helped found the yé-yé style of music, a pop-inspired cultural movement that swept through British and American rock in the 1960s.
Her popularity made her one of the most famous names in show business at the time, having worked with Mick Jagger and Bob Dylan, among others. Ardie also worked with songwriters such as Serge Gainsbourg, Patrick Modiano, Michelle Berger and Catherine Lara.
But her life was not always so glamorous and happy. Françoise grew up as an anxious child in postwar Paris with a troubled family. She was born as a result of a tumultuous affair between a young woman and an already married man twenty years older than her: her parents raised her separately - her mother worked long hours to earn even food, and her father rarely visited, although he insisted that Françoise attend a convent school.
Her later years were marred by illness. The performer was put into an induced coma before her life was saved by a new form of chemotherapy. Towards the end of her life, she became an advocate of euthanasia, saying that it was "inhumane" for France not to legalize this controversial procedure. "It is not the job of doctors to fulfill every request, but to reduce unnecessary suffering from an incurable disease from the moment it becomes unbearable," the singer said.
In one of her last interviews before her death, Françoise admitted that the only person she would miss was her son: "I think first of all about the enormous grief of leaving my son, of causing him pain. But I would rather die than endure unbearable conditions for a long time."
