Orlando Bloom is 48: what was the actor's biggest sacrifice for the role and what terrible injury almost ended his life

Orlando Bloom is 48 years old

On January 13, the famous Hollywood actor and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Orlando Bloom, known for his roles in the films "The Lord of the Rings" and "Pirates of the Caribbean," celebrates his 48th birthday. The celebrity has built a brilliant career in the world of cinema and made sacrifices for the sake of filming.

However, all this could not have happened because of a tragic accident that the actor experienced in his youth. OBOZ.UA offers to familiarize you with the details.

The injury that almost ruined the actor's life

At the age of 21, Bloom had an accident that almost ruined his career. He could have been disabled for life, which, fortunately, did not happen. After a fight with his friends, Orlando fell from the third floor. He suffered a serious spinal injury and was temporarily paralyzed.

In an interview with Men's Health magazine, Bloom admitted that doctors did not give him a rosy prognosis at the time. However, after undergoing a difficult course of treatment and rehabilitation, he got back on his feet, and a year and a half later he was already starring in "The Lord of the Rings" as the elf Legolas.

Now the actor has to work on his back constantly. He does yoga, Pilates, tennis, and cycling.

It is noteworthy that this injury was not the only one in Orlando's life. He smashed his head, got into an accident, and broke his ribs, nose, and wrist.

Sacrifice for filming and incredible transformation

In 2024, a British feature film in the genre of psychological thriller, "The Cut," was released, where Bloom played the role of a boxer who is ending his career. For the filming, he had to make a sacrifice – to lose extreme weight. During the preparations, the actor managed to lose 23 kilograms in three months. Later he admitted that this transformation had a significant impact on his health and psyche.

"I gradually reduced the amount of food I ate over the course of three months, right up until the very beginning of filming, when I was in the lightest shape. I lost 23 kilograms, and at the beginning of filming I weighed about 83 kilograms," he told Variety, "I lost quite a bit of weight and was psychologically exhausted. For the last three weeks in London, before the start of filming, I ate only tuna and cucumbers. I literally thought I was going to die."

Bloom admitted that during the filming he felt terrible hunger, which drove him crazy. Nevertheless, he considers the colossal transformation that happened to his body to be "exciting" rather than "scary."
