"We must finally wake up": Germany is outraged by the delay in US aid to Ukraine

German politicians have expressed concern that Republicans in the U.S. Senate have failed to vote on providing Kyiv with new military aid. They consider this to be the first warning signal for the future of a free and independent Ukraine, as well as for the security of the whole of Europe.

In their opinion, European countries will be under an even greater threat if Donald Trump returns to the presidency. According to DW, this was stated by the chairman of the Bundestag Committee on International Affairs, Michael Roth of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD).

"The blocking of aid to Ukraine in Congress is only the first portent of what else could happen if Donald Trump is re-elected to the White House in November. Then Europe's security will no longer be immediately guaranteed. The future of a free and independent Ukraine will be in the greatest danger," he warned.

At the same time, the German politician criticized the position of the European Union, which has "relied for too long" on the fact that the United States will continue to provide Ukraine with comprehensive military support.

"We Europeans must finally take more responsibility to deter and stop Russian imperialism. This is the right way, regardless of the name of the next president (of the United States) - Trump or Biden," Michael Roth called.

Norbert Röttgen, a foreign policy expert of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), also believes that the position of the Republicans in the Senate is "destructive for the foreign policy weight of the United States."

In his opinion, the conflict between Democrats and Republicans over the issue of assistance to Ukraine is weakening allies' confidence in Washington and encouraging countries such as China and Iran to challenge the United States militarily. The politician also called on Europe to strengthen its security in light of Trump's possible return to the presidency.

"We must finally wake up and prepare for a possible Trump presidency by investing heavily in our own security," Röttgen emphasized.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, Ukraine's Ambassador to the United States Oksana Markarova noted that on February 8, the US Senate will reconsider the bill on assistance to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, which failed to pass the day before. However, it will exclude the issue of American migration reform.
