US Supreme Court urged to prevent Trump from participating in Colorado primary: what is known

Representatives of Colorado have called on the US Supreme Court to uphold a court ruling that bans odious US politician Donald Trump from participating in the state's Republican primary. The reason was the storming of the Capitol in January 2021 by supporters of former President Trump.

The application was filed by six voters from Colorado - four Republicans and two independents, supported by the liberal watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. Reuters reports.

The plaintiffs believe that Trump is not eligible to run for president. On January 6, 2021, he could have incited his aides to "rebel" against the vote count.

"Instead of peacefully transferring power, Trump intentionally organized and incited an aggressive mob to attack the United States Capitol in a desperate attempt to prevent the counting of electoral votes cast against him," the plaintiffs said in their lawsuit.

TheRepublican primary in Colorado is scheduled for March 5, 2024. Trump's only rival is Republican Nikki Haley, former governor of South Carolina and former US ambassador to the United Nations.

The lawsuit, filed by Colorado voters, is part of a broader effort to strip Trump of his right to run for office under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. "Therefore, a possible ruling by the judges on the Colorado primary could affect the outcome of this campaign," Reuters suggested.

The third section of the 14th Amendment prohibits any "officer of the United States" who has taken an oath to support the Constitution and then "shall have participated in a rebellion or insurrection against it, or shall have given aid or comfort to its enemies" from holding public office.

Trump's lawyers, for their part, argue that he did not participate in the 2021 "uprising". Representatives of the politician's interests also say that presidents are exempt from the "disqualification clause" of the US Constitution.

Earlier, the media reported that Nikki Haley's refusal to leave the presidential race alarmed Trump, and he criticized his rival in private and publicly.
