US Senate confirms new CIA director: what is known about John Ratcliffe
The United States Senate has confirmed the appointment of John Ratcliffe as the head of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Thus, Mr. Ratcliffe became the second member of the new US administration to be confirmed by the Senate.
According to AP, 74 senators voted for the appointment. Another 25 voted against, and one lawmaker did not participate in the vote at all.
Immediately after the Senate vote, the new CIA director was sworn in by Vice President J.D. Vance.
Ratcliffe was briefly the CIA director during Donald Trump's first term as president. However, he is considered a loyal Trump supporter, and when he was a lawmaker, he strongly opposed Trump's first impeachment.
At a Senate hearing on the CIA director nomination, Ratcliffe said that intelligence should "actively engage new high technologies," including artificial intelligence, "to confront adversaries," including Russia and China.
Ratcliffe was born in Mount Prospect, Illinois, in 1965 to a family of teachers. A lawyer by training, he was a private attorney until 2004, when he joined the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Texas (he was appointed interim U.S. Attorney in 2007).
From 2015 to 2020, Ratcliffe was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, and from 2020 to 2021, he served as the Director of the CIA.
Donald Trump has recently decided on his candidacy for this position.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, the agent who tried to shield Trump with his own body during the assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania will be appointed head of the US Secret Service. This is Sean Curran, a field agent of the service, and he has been protecting Trump for the past four and a half years.
