Iran was planning to assassinate Trump - CNN

In the past few weeks, US intelligence agencies have received intelligence that Iran was preparing an assassination attempt on Donald Trump. The US Secret Service and Trump's campaign have been informed of this.

CNN writes about this, citing several informed sources. An unnamed US national security official said that the warning took place before the start of Saturday's rally in Pennsylvania.

At the same time, according to the sources, there is no indication that Thomas Matthew Crooks, who shot at Trump at this rally, was connected to Iran's intentions.

"In response to the growing threat, the Secret Service has dramatically increased resources and means to protect former President Trump. All this was done on the eve of Saturday," the unnamed official assured CNN.

At the same time, the Trump campaign did not answer journalists' questions about whether it had been informed of the Iranian threat.

"We do not comment on President Trump's security measures. All questions should be directed to the United States Secret Service," the campaign said in a statement.

Secret Service officials have repeatedly warned the Trump campaign against holding open-air rallies, which pose a greater risk than other events that the agency can better control, the sources said. According to the sources, these warnings were more general in nature.

US National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said that no links have been established between the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, and anyone else.

The publication recalls that Iran has repeatedly promised to take revenge for the assassination of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Commander Qassem Soleimani by the US military in January 2020 when Donald Trump was president of the United States. The increase in threats coincided with an increase in activity in Iranian state media, which constantly mentioned Trump, which caused additional concerns among American officials.

As a reminder, on July 13, Donald Trump was shot at during a rally in Pennsylvania. He was injured, and there were also victims among the politician's supporters. The shooter was killed in the attack.

The U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security has drawn attention to a strange factor in the attempted assassination of Trump. The shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, who fired a number of shots at the politician, should not have had access to a "direct line of sight." With this in mind, an independent assessment of the incident will be conducted.
