Unrecognized Transnistria decides to hold its own referendum on EU accession: Moldova's reaction

The unrecognized "Transnistrian Moldovan Republic" has announced that it wants to hold its own referendum "on its attitude toward the European Union." This was announced on October 11 by the so-called foreign ministry of the "PMR".

This was reported by NewsMaker. It should be noted that this is due to the fact that a national referendum is scheduled for October 20 in Moldova on whether the country should amend the Constitution to include the desire of Moldovan citizens to join the EU.

This, if the citizens wish, will be done to prevent possible attempts by future governments to change the course from a pro-European one.

Tiraspol, on the other hand, accused Chisinau of not wanting to take into account the votes of Transnistrian residents in the constitutional referendum on the country's accession to the European Union.

"In connection with the plans of the Republic of Moldova to ignore the position of the Transnistrian people, without even trying to offer to open polling stations on the territory of Transnistria, we note that in order to obtain the real opinion of all Transnistrians, we consider it quite possible to hold a referendum on the attitude to the European Union on our territory," the PMR said in a statement.

The statement emphasizes that the voting can be held on the basis of agreements between the parties, with the participation of international observers, and "if the international community is ready to take into account the opinion of the population of Transnistria."

It is worth noting that such statements from Tiraspol are unexpected, as Transnistria constantly reminds Chisinau that it is a separate entity, while Moldova has never separated this region from itself. According to Moldovan legislation, Transnistria has the status of an autonomous territorial entity with a special legal status. No UN member state recognizes the independence of the "TMR".

How Moldova reacted

The Reintegration Bureau of Moldova believes that the statement of the foreign ministry of Transnistria is a manipulation, "most likely made on the instructions of external forces."

They also noted that all Moldovan citizens, regardless of their place of residence, are expected to vote in the presidential election and referendum on October 20.

"For the residents of the eastern regions of the country, 30 polling stations will be opened within the Security Zone, in the settlements under the control of the constitutional authorities. Opening of polling stations in the uncontrolled perimeter, where there is no guarantee of the security of the process, no certainty that there will be no external interference that could affect the result, is contrary to the law," the statement said.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, Moldova said that the aggressor country Russia bribed at least 130 thousand residents of the country on the eve of the presidential election. In September 2024 alone, more than $15 million was transferred to the accounts of Moldovan citizens from Russia.
