The judge who issued the arrest warrant for Putin was elected President of the ICC in The Hague

The judges of the International Criminal Court at a plenary session elected Judge Tomoko Akane as President of the Court. It was she who issued the arrest warrant for Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin.

This is reported by the ICC website. Rosario Salvatore Aitala and Reine Alapini-Gansu became vice presidents.

"I am honored to have been elected by my fellow judges to the position of President of the ICC. In these challenging times, the Court needs stable leadership. In my work, I will focus on promoting dialogue with States Parties and States that have not yet ratified the Rome Statute, as well as on strengthening communication between the court, the defense and victims' representatives," the newly elected ICC President said.

It is noted that members of the Presidency are elected for a three-year term. The body plays a key role in providing strategic guidance to the ICC as a whole. The Presidency coordinates its actions with other bodies and seeks the consent of the Prosecutor on issues of mutual interest. The Presidency also supervises the activities of the Registry and formulates a wide range of administrative policies affecting the overall functioning of the Court, as well as concludes cooperation agreements with states and international organizations.

In addition, in accordance with the Rome Statute governing the ICC, the Presidency is responsible for the proper administration of the Court, with the exception of the Office of the Prosecutor.

As OBOZ.UA reported, on March 17, 2023, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Putin and Russian Ombudsman Lvova-Belova. They are suspected of committing an international crime - deporting Ukrainian children to Russia. The warrant will be valid for the rest of the defendants' lives.

Later, the State Department expressed doubts that Putin could be tried by a tribunal while he is still the head of state. The reason is that national courts cannot overcome the immunity of presidents and leaders of countries.

On March 5, 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Russian Long-Range Aviation Commander Sergei Kobylash and Russian Black Sea Fleet Commander Viktor Sokolov.
