Politico: Azerbaijan may invade Armenia within weeks

Azerbaijan can launch an invasion of Armenia within weeks. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken warned a small group of lawmakers last week that the State Department is monitoring the possibility of such a development.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has previously called on Armenia to open a "corridor" along its southern border linking mainland Azerbaijan with the exclave bordering Turkey and Iran. Aliyev threatened to resolve the issue "by force."

Nevertheless, Blinken expressed confidence in the ongoing diplomatic negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

In its statement, the State Department declined to comment on this information, but emphasized the agency's commitment to "Armenia's sovereignty and territorial integrity" and to resolving the conflict through "direct negotiations."

Azerbaijan's military invasion of the region last month prompted more than 100,000 ethnic Armenians living in Nagorno-Karabakh to flee. Local leaders surrendered under Russian mediation and agreed to dissolve their unrecognized state that existed three decades ago. Since then, Azerbaijani forces have detained more than a dozen former leaders.

As you know, the so-called Nagorno-Karabakh Republic will cease to exist on January 1, 2024. The relevant decree was signed by its "president" Samvel Shahramanyan. This surrender was the result of the September anti-terrorist operation conducted by Azerbaijan.

As reported by OBOZREVATEL, on September 28, Armenian citizen Ruben Vardanyan, a former "state minister" of unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh, was taken into custody in Azerbaijan. On the same day, the "ex-minister of foreign affairs" of the so-called Artsakh, David Babayan, announced his decision to surrender to the Azerbaijani authorities voluntarily.
