There is a condition

Armenia is ready to recognise Nagorno-Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan, but there is a condition. It is about ensuring the security of the Armenian population.

This statement was made by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at a press conference. This was reported by the Armenian news agency Arka.am.

"Armenia is ready to recognise the territorial integrity of 86,600 square kilometres, and in our understanding, Azerbaijan is ready to recognise the territorial integrity of Armenia with an area of 29,800 square kilometres," he said.

At the same time, he noted that the issue of the rights and security of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh should be discussed within the framework of the Stepanakert-Baku dialogue under international guarantees for the negotiations.

According to Pashinyan, Armenia expects international guarantees that such talks will be held.

It is worth noting that Nagorno-Karabakh is part of the internationally recognised territory of Azerbaijan, although after the collapse of the USSR, the majority Armenian population declared it an independent state.

The issue of Nagorno-Karabakh re-emerged after the six-week war between Armenia and Azerbaijan in 2020, which saw a significant part of the territory come under Baku's de facto control, while the rest was connected to Armenia by a single road, the Lachin corridor, under the protection of Russian peacekeepers.

Earlier, Pashinyan had already declared Yerevan's readiness to conclude a peace agreement with Baku on mutual recognition of territorial integrity. In practice, this means Armenia's refusal to recognise Nagorno-Karabakh's independence and its recognition as Azerbaijani territory.

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, Russia has unexpectedly decided to transfer control of the Lachin corridor, the only road connecting Armenia and the temporarily occupied Nagorno-Karabakh, to Azerbaijan.
