Keir Starmer became the new Prime Minister of Britain

The leader of the British Labor Party, Keir Starmer, has become the new Prime Minister. His political party won the general election with a landslide, ending the 14-year era of Conservative rule.

Thus, Labor won 410 out of 650 seats in parliament, while the Conservatives won only 131 seats. According to CNN, Starmer promises to be the "agent of change" that Britain needs.

In particular, he assured that he aims to develop the country's economy by reforming laws, as well as to create a sovereign wealth fund with $9.2 billion in public funds to help pay for the transition to zero net emissions.

Regarding relations with Ukraine, the Labor leader said that nothing will change in terms of support for our country.

The current British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, has already admitted the defeat of his party and congratulated Starmer on his victory. At the same time, Sunak said he was personally responsible for this defeat.

Sir Keir Rodney Starmer has been the leader of the Labor Party since April 4, 2020. In 2015-2016, he served as the Shadow Minister for Migration, and in 2016-2020 as the Shadow Minister for Brexit.

Vadym Prystaiko, former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the United Kingdom and former Foreign Minister of Ukraine shared his opinion on the British election and its impact on relations with Ukraine with OBOZ.UA. He emphasized that Keir Starmer is a man who sincerely believes in law and the power of law. This is his strength and weakness. He usually weighs all his steps as a lawyer.

As for Labor's Ukrainian policy, there will probably be changes. And they are logical, says Prystaiko. In his opinion, our country can count on a new wave of military aid.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, in February 2024, Starmer visited Kyiv and met with Zelenskyy. The British politician then called for "justice in The Hague" after visiting places where mass killings of Ukrainians took place. He vowed that Ukraine would always have the "unwavering support" of his party.
