Hackers from the DPRK hacked Russia's largest missile manufacturer: Reuters has learned the details

A group of North Korean hackers secretly infiltrated the computer networks of the Russian corporation NPO Mashinostroenie. This is one of Russia's leading rocket and space enterprises that produces ballistic, hypersonic and cruise missiles, and the cyber spies were hunting for the technology they needed.

Reuters reports this with reference to its own sources in the field of cybersecurity. It is noted that groups of cyber spies affiliated with the North Korean government (ScarCruft and Lazarus) secretly hacked into the system of the missile design bureau in the city of Reutov near Moscow.

The hackers infiltrated the company's IT environment and were able to read emails, navigate between networks and extract various data. The publication notes that they had access to the Russian corporation's networks from late 2021 until May 2022, when IT engineers from the Russian bureau were able to detect the cyber spies' activities.

A few months later, North Korea announced a number of achievements in its ballistic missile development programme. However, the newspaper notes that it is unclear whether these developments were related to the hacking.

This incident shows that a North Korea isolated by sanctions is even targeting its allies, such as Russia, to obtain important technologies.

The Reutov Missile Design Bureau specialises in three areas: hypersonic missile development, satellite technology, and next-generation ballistic weapons. These are areas that have been of great interest to North Korea since it began developing its own intercontinental ballistic missile, which is allegedly capable of striking the US mainland.

The news of the hacking came shortly after Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu visited Pyongyang last month to mark the 70th anniversary of the Korean War.

On the night of 7 August, hackers broke into the website of the Moscow City Bureau of Technical Inventory, which collects data on property owners in Moscow and the Moscow region. After the hack, the site posted a message that all data on the locations and property of Russian politicians, military and intelligence officers had been transferred to the Ukrainian Defence Forces.

Earlier, Ukrainian hackers hacked into the databases of the Russia-Africa 2023 economic summit. The documents obtained as a result of the attack show, among other things, that the United States is investing in education, healthcare, cybersecurity, energy independence and other vital sectors for the development of African countries. Russia, on the other hand, sees Africa as a raw material base that can be used for mining.
