Peter Navarro was sentenced to four months in prison

In the United States of America, a court sentenced former White House counselor under President Donald Trump, Peter Navarro, to four months in prison for contempt of Congress. He was also ordered to pay a fine of $9,500.

This was reported by CNN on Thursday, January 25. The case against Trump's former adviser concerns his refusal to appear at a meeting of the House committee investigating the circumstances of the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

In September, Navarro was found guilty of two counts of contempt of the US Congress. Prosecutors asked for six months in prison for each but the court merged them and reduced the sentence to four months in prison.

Mr. Navarro claimed that he considered the case against him to be politically motivated. In response, Judge Amit Mehta said that the former Trump adviser was not a victim or target of political persecution.

"You are not a victim. You are not the object of political persecution. Unfortunately, when you were called to testify, you did not show an equal branch of government (Congress) the same degree of respect. These are circumstances that you created yourself," the journalists quoted the judge as saying.

As noted, Navarro has already filed an appeal with the District Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.
