NATO candidate's position on Ukraine

Former Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karinš, a candidate for the post of NATO Secretary General, said that Kyiv's partners have already made a decision on Ukraine's accession to NATO. Now it is only a matter of specifying the steps towards this goal.

Moreover, these steps should be taken not only by Ukraine, but also by representatives of the Bloc. The Latvian politician said this in an interview with Channel 24.

"As individual member states, we are currently providing military assistance to Ukraine. Perhaps, as an Alliance, we could do it more actively. This is one nuance. The second is that there are different requirements to join NATO," he said.

Thus, according to Karinš, NATO members should focus in Washington on concrete steps that can be taken right now. They have already partially determined what will happen next, and now it is time to specify the actions that will help achieve this goal.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, Karinš is ready to take part in the competition for the post of NATO Secretary General after Stoltenberg's term of office is confirmed in 2024. The Latvian official, according to him, will contribute to the alliance thanks to his experience in leadership as prime minister, a clear understanding of the threat from Russia, a firm position on Ukraine, and proven experience in building international consensus.
