Slovakia's Foreign Minister says the country is ready to support the start of negotiations with Kyiv on EU accession

Slovakia's position on Ukraine's accession to the European Union has changed. The country stated that it is ready to support the start of negotiations with Kyiv and noted positive developments in reforms in Ukraine.

This was announced by Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár following a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels. The issue of Ukraine's accession will be discussed at the EU summit to be held on December 14-15 in Belgium.

"Having assessed Kyiv's reform efforts, we are ready to support the opening of accession negotiations, which will be discussed at the upcoming European Council meeting. However, our eastern neighbor still has a long and thorny path ahead of it, and all the necessary measures need to be not only approved but also implemented and monitored," the minister said.

At the same time, Blanár warned that it is important to focus on "finding peaceful solutions" and restoring Ukraine, which are key to the country's approach to EU membership.

He also emphasized that Slovakia has no plans to provide military support to Ukraine but will continue to provide humanitarian assistance, including demining and support for Ukraine's energy infrastructure in the winter.

Earlier, Slovakia's newly appointed Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár said that he "cannot imagine" Ukraine's membership in the European Union under current circumstances. He also noted that our country is still "terribly far away from joining the EU," Ukraine can count on the prospect of the future but cannot claim any exceptions. Juraj Blanár also hinted that Ukraine should make concessions to Russia.

Earlier, he has made several disinformation statements about the war in Ukraine and repeated Russian propaganda.
