Bulgaria supports Ukraine's accession to NATO

Bulgaria has officially stated that it supports Ukraine's membership in the North Atlantic Alliance under an accelerated procedure. This decision was made in preparation for the NATO Summit in Vilnius.

Bulgarian Defence Minister Todor Tagarev said during a briefing in Odesa on Monday, 21 August, that at that time Sofia supported Ukraine's position on joining the bloc "as far as circumstances allowed," Ukrinform reports.

He explained that in order to join NATO, the hostilities in Ukraine, started by the aggressor country Russia, must be completed.

Tagarev added that as soon as the war is over, Ukraine should have a very clear and quick alliance with NATO.

"We support the final text of the Vilnius Summit on Ukraine. And according to the action plan, we can say that we have moved from several steps to one step for Ukraine to join NATO," the Bulgarian defence minister said.

Earlier it was reported that Bulgaria had announced its accession to the G7 declaration of support for Ukraine. The G7 declaration was also supported by Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

Thus, 18 countries have already joined the security guarantees for Ukraine.

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, Greece has officially supported Ukraine's membership in NATO. It has become the 24th member state of the Alliance with which Kyiv has formalised this support.
