Azerbaijan abandons talks with Armenia in Granada: what's going on

Talks between the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia were scheduled for October 5, Thursday, in Grenada, Spain. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan was ready to sign a peace agreement on Nagorno-Karabakh, but at the last minute Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev refused to participate in the meeting.

This was reported by Interfax. The reason for the refusal was the anti-Azerbaijani atmosphere declared on the platform.

"The reason is the destructive position of France, as well as the disagreement of Paris and Berlin to allow Turkey to participate in the meeting. In such circumstances, the Azerbaijani side refused to hold talks," the news agency quoted the Aliyev administration as saying.

It is noted that the talks in Grenada were to be held with the participation of EU President Charles Michel, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron.

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, Azerbaijan has responded to a lawsuit filed by Armenia in the International Court of Justice over the infringement of Armenian rights in Nagorno-Karabakh. Yerevan demands that the court impose provisional measures and oblige Baku to comply with them, but Azerbaijan considers this lawsuit "completely groundless and absurd."

At the same time, Azerbaijani special services detained three "ex-presidents" of Nagorno-Karabakh. They are accused of separatism.
