Turkish professor warns of an 8.5 earthquake: which countries will be affected
An earthquake with a magnitude of 8.5 could hit the mainland of Greece and the western coast of Turkey. This will not come as a surprise, and the risks may increase at any time.
The relevant statement was made by Turkish professor Suleyman Pampal, according to a local publication. According to him, "an earthquake of magnitude 8.5 in the Aegean Sea would not be a surprise."
He warned of possible risks of tsunamis and volcanic eruptions. The seismologist named four cities in Turkey that could suffer significant damage in the event of an earthquake: Izmir, Muğla, Aydın, and Çanakkale, but the greatest damage would be caused to Greece.
"In particular, the Greek island of Santorini is an active volcanic complex, and in the past, there have been major eruptions. These eruptions are known to have caused serious tsunami waves and significant destruction in the history of the Mediterranean," the professor noted.
As for volcanic earthquakes, they are harbingers of volcanic movements.
"If magma rises under the sea, volcanic earthquakes occur and pose a serious tsunami risk," Pampal explained.
He noted that earthquakes of magnitude 8 to 8.5 are possible in the Aegean Sea, and emphasized that such a powerful shock could affect the Greek islands, mainland Greece, and the western coast of Turkey.
As a reminder, on October 11, 2024, an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred in the Black Sea, the tremors of which were felt even in Bulgaria. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Black Sea, 150 kilometers off the coast of Turkey in the Bartin district, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences estimated the strength of the earthquake at 5 on the Richter scale.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, on February 1, an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.67 on the Richter scale occurred in Poltava region. The tremors were recorded at a depth of 3 km. Many people felt the tremors, but the vast majority did not pay attention to them.
